There are at least four main categories of environmental hazards that are prominent in most societies at the present time: cultural, physical, chemical, and biological hazards. According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour (2012), physical hazards are the most common environmental hazard a person can be exposed into as it can result to injury, illness or fatalities. Some of the notable examples of physical hazards are loud noises, high exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet rays from computers and machinery; and electrical hazards . Biological hazards, according to Dutta and Sachdeva (2007), are mostly hazards caused from microorganisms that can transfer diseases or contaminate a system it inhabits. Some of the common biological hazards come from bacteria and viruses from plants and humans, blood or any other body fluid, fungi, and even bites from insects. Chemical hazards, on the other hand, come from harmful chemicals coming from air, water, soil, food and even in some human-made products. Some of the notable examples of chemical hazards are aerosols, chlorine, acetic acid, and mercury. This paper is aimed at examining the disposal of waste and the environmental hazards that are associated with this process. In particular, it is necessary to examine the evolution of the techniques that are used by people in order to utilize unwanted materials or goods.

For instance, one can compare open dumps with modern landfills. The main issue is that currently, people take extra precautions to reduce the pollution of soil, water, and air.

An open dump can be described as an unsupervised or abandoned debris or garbage. In this case, the waste is not covered or compacted in any way. It can include various types of unwanted products or materials such as bottles, glass, plastics, light bulbs, spray cans, and so forth. The main problem is that these dumps contain hazardous materials that pose a threat to the health of people and environment.

Much attention should be paid to paints, fluorescent tubes, lithium batteries, or other materials should be utilized according to specific rules since they are very toxic (Pawlowski, 2008, p. 10). They can lead the pollution of soil, air, and water. These are the main risks that should be considered.

Apart from, one can speak about modern landfills. They have the following characteristics:

covering and compacting of wastes;
safeguards that protect the groundwater;
the technologies that collect lechates (Reddy, 2011).

With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution.

Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution.

Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in today’s world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. The dry-farm waste, dry grass, leaves, and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to an excess of sulphur dioxide in the air.
