With the loss of her leg in 1981, Sudha Chandran went on to become an inspiration as a Bharatnatyam dancer as well as actress. She appeared in film and many TV series on Indian television.
She began her career with the Telugu film, Mayuri , a film based on her own life. The same film had dubbing in Tamil and Malayalam. In Hindi it had the name, Naache Maayuri. For her performance in Mayuri in 1986, she received the honor of Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards .
She later played Yamini in Nagin 1,2, & 3 , Chitradevi in Devam Thanda Veedu , the Tamil remake of Saath Nibhana Saathiya and Anand’s first wife in Hum Paanch (season 2) . These were just some of her noted roles.
She has fluency in the languages of English, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada.
Biography of Sudha Chandran
Born in 1965 on September 27th in Mumbai, India, Sudha Chandran’s family originally came from Vayalur, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Her father, K.D. Chandran, was a former actor. She graduated from Mithibai College in Mumbai, where she earned her B.A.degree. She subsequently attained an M.A. in economics.
A tragic accident resulted in the amputation of her leg in 1980. However, she was able to get a prosthetic and make her way back to the world, becoming a Bharatnatyam dancer. Soon after her return, she made the film, Mayuri , where she met her future husband, the assistant director. It was love at first sight.
In 1994, as a noted dancer, Sudha Chandran ran away to marry Ravi Dang. Her parents did not like the idea of a marriage between a Punjabi (Ravi) and a Tamilian (Sudha). The couple tried to convince the parents but ultimately ran away and married.
Her career includes film and television. Over the years, she received abundant awards. Included are the following:
- Special Jury Award for Mayuri in 1986
- Indian Television Academy Award in 2005
- Asianet Television awards in 2013
- Best Character actress for Aardram in 2013
She is also the recipient of a Vijay Television Award in 2014 and in 2015 for Deivam Thandha Veedu . Additionally, she holds Golden Petal Awards for Naagin and Naagin-2 , which she won in 2017.
